How do I know if I have a problem in my ceiling?

The signs of damage may appear gradually over an extended period of time, or you may come home one day to find large cracks, holes or even that the ceiling has completely collapsed!

Some of the things associated with water damage to look out for are leaks and dripping water, mildew or mould build up, a sagging or bulging in the plasterboard, paint discolouration or peeling, cracks and holes in the ceiling. If you spot any of these an expert assessment would be recommended.

How do I find the leak in my ceiling?

Did you know that the location of a leak may not always be found directly above the visible water damage in a ceiling? As water travels it can be difficult for the untrained eye to find the root of its cause and therefore it is recommended to have a full inspection by roof plumber determine the cause of the leak.

What are the common causes of leaks in a ceiling?

Can a sagging ceiling collapse?

Most certainly. Poor construction, old/ deteriorated ceilings and severe water damage can cause a ceiling to collapse. This can lead to other problems such as risk to personal injury, financial stress and damage to your interior belongings, furniture, and housing infrastructure. Signs to look out for would be a sagging ceilings or cracks in the joins or cornices. Homes that are 30+ years old, may have a ceiling made from plasterglass. This outdated building practice, where the ceilings were suspended by straps rather than fixed with screws and glue, may increase the chance of a ceiling collapsing.
